Tourist information: The City of Cambridge is known throughout the worldThink of Cambridge, England and immediately Kings College Chapel comes to mind, perhaps the Bridge of Sighs at St Johns or even punts on the river but there are many more things waiting for the tourist to discover. Cambridge has been important strategically and commercially since the Roman Legions set up camp on a site overlooking the river. The fortunes of the town changed dramatically in 1209 when the students first arrived having fled Oxford for fear of their lives. Over the centuries the reputation of Cambridge has continued to grow as a place of educational excellence and in the progress has provided us with many fine buildings. A walk through Queens College, for example, can feel like a step back in time. Absorb the atmosphere as you stand in the court surrounded by buildings dating back to the mid 15th century. See the Colleges where the great literary writers such as Lord Byron, Rupert Brooke and John Milton studied. Many Cambridge men have changed the world's scientific thinking - Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Lord Rutherford. Others changed our history politically - Oliver Cromwell, William Pitt the Younger and William Wilberforce.
